Dog has Rabie shots, but got in fight with fox.

Rest assured guys, this isn't my big lug. Actually, a friend of mine who owns an outside dog, said that it is normal for her to get into fights with strays that enter her yard. She said she was surprised by a strange screeching sound of an anmial getting hurt and didn't think anything of it.

She had a few neighbors stated that a fox was running in the neighborhood and headed toward their yard. So, now she is worried about her dog and asked me what she should do.

I asked is she vaccinated with rabies and she said yes, but according the records, she has to get re-rabie shots by the end of March. (That's when the rabie's vaccination expires.)

The only thing I could tell her was if she called the police to alert them to this. She said no as she thought it was just a stray dog and I began to worry. I told her she should at least report to the police. They'll probably want to keep a close eye on her. That scared her as she doesn't want her dog taken away from her. I told her, she has to report it non the less.

So my question is, even though she has her rabies shot every year, is it possible that they can still get the rabie disease?

rabies vaccinations provide immunity for a decade or more. So your friend is probably safe...if there are wounds tho, it might be a good idea to have the dog seen so they dont' get infected, Iam sure many wild animals have som' interesting bacteria

It is also perfectly safe to get a back up rabies booster just in case.
(tell your friend to watch out for mange (mange mites love foxes too :P)

I will be sure to pass that along. (Although I don't think we have them here. But I could be wrong. I'll pass it on non the less.) Thanks guys. I know rabie shots prevents rabies, but I wondered if it actually will when a dog is bitten by a rabied animal. You know, I have never had to deal with rabies myself. (I don't know why I haven't asked my vet about it considering we have a high rate of rabies.)

Anyways, thanks again guys.

We hunt with Jrts to fox, as long as the dog is up to date on its vacc's & rabies, we don't worry about.

I agree! I would just take her in for a rabies booster (the dog is due an a few weeks anyway, right?) and treat any wounds.
Your friend shouldn't have to worry about anyone taking her dog as the vaccination hasn't expired yet.

I've just checked my email and she told me she got the courage to report the incident and they told her to keep an extra close watch on her until the vet comes into her town and has already made her an appointment.

She isn't so worried and she wants to thank you all for the info. (She's concidering joining now. ^_^)
