I think I may have missed out on when and where you got her, what happened to her, etc etc. When I worked in a kennel I used to come across dogs who were sooooo scared, I am sure she gets it already that you are there to help her but maybe lock everyone else up somewhere and just sit quietly on the floor with some treats and wait for her to come out, stay silent and whatnot and just give her treats or food and pet her, no words, no clicker, no other dogs, nothing... I used to do this in the playroom with scared dogs during private playtime for 30 mins and they wound up being sooooooo calm and ate their dinner (if they weren't eating before which is normal), etc.
I adopted her two years ago at the pound. They estimated her age at ten years old at the time. She was a stray.

She used to spend 24/7 with me ..she did show signs of phobias and obsessions from day one...but nothing alarming...

I would take her to work with me for a full year..and from what I can tell she enjoyed it alot...she likes people. Then one day we got to the door to my job and she froze up and would NOT go inside. I had to carry her in since turning around and leaving wasn't an option...I didn't bring her for a week after that and then I tried again...same thing.... I could not think of anything that could have triggered this...

She used to like the dog park (once again for the people) and then one day got very very trampled and I decided it was too dangerous to take her at her age.

With less to do with herself six hours a day the obsessions and fears escalated and now shes basically inconsolable.

I used to hand feed her and sit with her but one day she decided that that was scary and now when I aproach her with food she runs and hides. She has had moments where she does not know where she is...who Iam...and stares at corners.

Because of her leg she can't be exercised...our walks are literally to the end of the street (like 50 feet) and back.

Perhaps shes gone stir crazy but instead of eating the couch she has become phobic...I don't know what to do tho...I have little options as to where I can take her and physically do with her.

More one on one time is probably a good idea tho. Especially if this cancer is the final curtain.

My dog growing up (we got her when I was 3 months old) started barking and staring at corners and walking in circles, she was 18, it was time I understand how you feel and I am sorry. I think one on one time will be good for her and you You are both in my thoughts

thank you....

her age is simply an estimate...thats the most frustrating thing...I don't know if the dog is 8 or 18.

I honestly feel that if she was rehomed...to a quiet..no other pet home with a stay at home owner...she would do better than here...not cured, but better... but finding such a home, getting them to take and old, sick, crazy dog and getting the SO to turn loose of her are fantasy unfortunately.

I will try more quiet time with her. Thanks again.

NP Crio. Let me know if you need anything. I hope 1 on 1 time helps in one way or another. Sometimes dogs like that need quiet time and complete silence to calm down and come to. Something I saw a lot of working in a kennel.

sorry to butt in, i think that pawz may really be on to something with the quiet time, if not just for critter, but for you too. it may be the right step to help you make a decision about her...and it certainly wouldn't hurt her any.
it wouldn't hurt to discuss her with pom rescue either....someone passionate about the breed may be willing to help her find that type of situation you mentioned....if they aren't, again, it will help you with your decision....i always feel better when i am dealing something tuff like this, if i am doing something constructive.....not that you aren't doing anything.....hope it didn't sound like that, but figuring out options never hurt anyone.....

LOL I didn't mean it for every situation sorry. Just when they swoop into shelters and take the PB dogs before they have a chance of being adopted from the shelter That is a good point! However I agree with Crio, if this is a medical thing is it better for Critter to end her time where she already is and is loved? Would adopting her out maybe only stress her out more? Its a tough call with situations like this.

If she has malignant cancer I don't see a rescue wanting her. Thanks for the suggestion tho. I think rehoming her at this point would not be in her best interest due to the stress and her being ill...it should have been done a year ago if it were to be done.

she began to limp on her walk so I had to carry her. Her pain meds must have worn off.

My husband is VERY attached to her and will have nothing to do with any ideas about rehoming (I tried about a year ago to talk him into it) or putting her down anyway... even in her best interest. Unfortunately the dog is his too and its not my decision to make alone...when he gets home on monday I will talk to him again.

i get lab results tomoro...we'll have to go from there.

sure is a tuff call, but like i said, figuring out what your options are when you are't sure can help you decide. if you find out that a particular option exhists, you no longer have to think "what if i would have chosen that route?" mostly, it gives me action to take when otherwise my stress increases because i haven't figured out how to work my magic wand yet and you never really know what will come of it, most likely nothing, but magic happens sometimes when you put the wand away and let someone else have a go....

(i didn't think you were saying anything really bad about those rescue groups outright, just an aspect of them...just felt silly posting that and the very next thread i look at is that one!)

I understand what your saying but whatever happens I have no regrets...she was slated to be euthanized and would have been dead years ago if I did not take her. The shelter GAVE her to me and paid for everything they were so shocked I wanted her. Everyday is a gift...I just don't want her to suffer needlessly.

I have learned alot from this dog, even if alot of it is what to avoid next time around, or how bad breeding can screw up a dogs head. Every dog I have will affect the next one in a positive way.
