I know you're not supposed to have this done if it's not necessary, but Coconut seems to need it done. We've had it done twice so far when she gets all the tell-tale signs of needing them expressed (scooting/licking/stinking/etc. - it was pretty bad the first time we went to the vet and they did it). She's on TOTW, and I'm hesitant to try to change her food because she gets colitis very easily. She only eats TOTW dry+soft and chicken/duck treats right now. Her poops are firm. Is it concerning if she needs her anal glands expressed regularly, or is there something we can add to her food that won't make her explode but would help the glands express naturally?
Thanks for the pumpkin suggestion. I had forgotten about it since it's seasonal, and I could never find any over the summer when she was having stomach problems. The stores may have it now though
Is the pumpkin/prune something to give regularly until she stops scooting (like daily?) or just one time and wait to see if she gets better?
We gave the prunes once or twice a week for a few months then when we were out we just stopped giving them (bc I never remember to buy them) and haven't had an issue since. She may need something added regularly, you will just have to see what happens.
LOL. Unfortunately I don't. We asked our kennel if they express them when they groom, and they do - so we did that last time. I'd rather pay the $25 to have her bathed and someone else do it. Our vet was ridiculously expensive when we went (it was a surprise $80 since we didn't know what was wrong with her ). I'll try the prunes and cross my fingers. I'd rather not have it done at all, and her starting to stink every month is no fun (otherwise we'd hardly bathe her).
If you feed the prunes on a regular basis you wont have the problem. small 1
medium 2 large 3 - twice a week. I chop them up and add to the food. My hound thinks there treats. He gets what we call smelly butt without them. Make sure you get the ones with nothing added. Leave the expressing to those that know what they are doing.
Yeah, it's weird. You know you love your dog when you've been smelling her butt all week to see if the prunes are working. It's gradually decreased the smell, and now I don't smell anything other than doggy. She still does carpet scoots, though. Maybe she's just itchy?
I'm also glad she likes them. She can be picky about what she'll eat, but she loves the prunes, cut up in her kibble or whole like a little chewy. She eats it kind of slow and runs from the cat and tosses it around when I give it to her whole. LOL.
