Advantage is very stinky... how to mask smell?

I put Niko's monthly Advantage on his back yesterday and now I remember why i miss frontline so much... (This is the 2nd month I have used it since frontline plus stopped working) Sheesh does Advantage STINK! For days afterwards, it smells like... I dont know, rotting or poop or... i dunno, horrid!

Last time a gave him a bath a few takes afterwards since wiping his neck/shoulder area with wet wipes/all purpose wipes didnt get rid of the stench. I know over bathing can lead to other problems so I dont want to have to give him a bath every month after applying Advantage...

Anyone else who uses Advantage notice this or is it just something going on with Niko's chemicals mixing with the Advantage? (there are no other bad side effects, no rash, soreness...ect or anything, just the stinky smell)

I used non scented wipes before and Im thinking to maybe try scented ones this time to wipe his neck/shoulder area?

Its a REALLY strong and bad smell... I dont even want to cuddle with him its THAT bad, and believe me the urge to hug and wrestle with him is hard to resist... But that smell... ICK! (my sister came over and said "ahh manda... did Niko roll in something or....")

Bleck!

I wouldn't consider once-a-month to be over-bathing. As long as you're using high quality dog shampoo, even once-a-week wouldn't really be too much if it were necessary. My boys both get bathed once a month.

I use "Sentry flea & tick shampoo with oatmeal for dogs and puppies"
Sergeant's Oatmeal Flea and Tick Shampoo - Dog - Sale - PetSmart

It doesnt have that one ingredient from store brands (can think of the name of it but it was a really long name...) that I was told is bad for their liver/kidney and has a smell i can actually stand... Who wants their dog to smells like an orange?? :O and has oatmeal to prevent drying out his coat.
-I figure if im going to give him a bath i might as well make it a flea and tick bath too.

-Dont worry about the Permethrin in it, I blow dry him after baths and the kittys never groom him.

Also, is this a smell you've always noticed after using the Advantage? My guys all use Advantage Multi, and I've never noticed any type of smell like you're describing, just the standard chemical smell you'd expect from that kind of thing.

Most of those type of treatments will include an estimate of how long after treatment you can bathe him, as well.

Gross! I don't consider once a month overbathing. Nola gets bathed twice a month (weekly if we don't go to the beach) to keep her skin from getting too itchy from grass. We use Boots and Barkley Puppy Shampoo. Super gentle and the smell is great! Only soap that doesn't break her out. You can get it at Target for about $4

Why use the flea and tick shampoo if your using a topical flea and tick killer?

Once a month bathing should be fine, if your worried about drying out his skin just use a gentle shampoo. I've used baby shampoo on my two LOL. I figured if it's designed for a baby's skin it shouldn't hurt my dogs, and if it got in their eyes it wouldn't hurt them. Shadow loves to toss his head around when I'm trying to wash it.

Are you sure your product is good? I've not ever smelled something as bad as you're describing either.

I don't know, I'd be inclined NOT to use it...

I noticed the same smell last time I sued it (this is only the 2nd time), it is ONLY on his shoulders/neck where I put the Advantage.

rain:
I dont think baby shampoo is supposed to be good for dogs, dont they have a different PH in their skin that humans....?

Ok maybe "rotten" is the wrong word. My sis says "chemically" is a better word. It reminds me of when Niko rolled in a stale muddy ick i dont know what and needed a bath... musky-ish
I find it weird that there is ANY smell once its dry. Frontline Plus never had any smell to it once it was dry... But there is MORE (amount wise) in the little dispenser of advantage than there was in frontline (same size dosage I checked it for Niko's weight class, always do to be careful).
--I am very sensitive to perfumes and smells (especially when wearing contacts for some strange reason, its like i can feel the scent in my eyes or something.. weird and hard to explain...) , my sister says its smelly but not as bad as "im" thinking it is...

Cali: (love your new avatar by the way)
Im thinking about trying advantix since the cats do not ever groom him and only occasionally rub against him (mostly his legs or chest), it wouldnt be that hard to keep them separate for a couple days while it dries.

TorachiKatashi:
Have you noticed it the advantage multi deals with ticks? Its not rated for them but i have read others saying it works against them.

AmandaNola:
I will check that out next time im at target found a vanilla scent that if its not too strong I may try and it has oatmeal... Boots & Barkley® 16-oz. Oatmeal Dog Shampoo - Va... : Target
-No ingredient list though.. im going to have to dig up that paper on the ingredient thats in store brands that is bad for dogs liver/kidneys... anyone know what the name of it is??

-Its good to know once a month for a bath ISNT too often. I read all these things about over bathing dogs and was a littler paranoid about it... Opinions on the Sentry i linked above?

The baby shampoo never seemed to hurt my two, but then I was doing good to wash them every two months usually it's longer and I just kept them brushed and combed.

I have Boots & Barkley Shed Control shampoo, but don't like it much. The ingredient list has lots of chemicals in it and it's not one that kills fleas.

Boots & Barkley Shed Control Shampoo Coco Beach Scent
Ingredients: Water, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide DEA, Cocamidopropyll Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 80, Fragrance, Aloe Vera Gel, D-Panthenol, Fish Oil, Vitamine E Acetate, Citric Acid, Propylene Glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, FD&C Blue #1, D&C Red #33

I switched to Oster Oatmeal Naturals and like it a lot better
Ingredients: Purified water, a blend of 4 natural & renewable coconut based cleansers, 2% all natural oatmael extract, thickening agent, natural safflower lipids, sheen & manageability agents, aloe vera, vitamin B5, natural fruit & flower extracts to reduce shedding, fragrance, salt, & preservatives.

Oster seems to have less chemicals and I found that it seems to work better. Maybe the Boots & Barkley Puppy Shampoo will work good.
