What are they shedding in the fall?

I read that most dogs do a heavy shed twice a year - once in the spring - which I understand - to shed their heavy winter coat - but what do they shed in the fall? Don't they just grow a winter coat under their summer coat? What is it that they are shedding?a

Depends on the dog. In Arty's case it appears to be mostly undercoat shedding out in the fall, but there's some over coat in there too. I've been assured thats normal for the breed. In Apollo's case he doesn't have a fall shed, he does exactly what you're thinking and just grows in his undercoat.

Some breeds shed all year round. Especially your undercoated dogs. The undercoat never stops growing so it has to come out..

Depends on the breed. Apollo is thickly undercoated all winter (starting late summer through early spring) with essentially no shed during that time period. Shortly before he blows his coat he'll start loosing some shed, then he blows it all and I'm covered in gold fluff for several weeks. Then he's bald under his over coat (as in I can see his skin on his belly) for a couple months, and then we repeat.

Though I'll admit that a Tibetan Mastiff isn't exactly your average dog lol.

sheding is depend of kind of dog and there breeding.
if we have Extar sheding wiht our dog.then it is my suggestion for every one
to use dry after shampo and to select the shampo with doctor advice.
which is better for our dog.

My dog has a single coat, and she is shedding like crazy right now. It's ridiculous; she barely has any fur to shed. It's everywhere.

when the winter coat grows in, the summer coat falls out, when the summer coat grows in, the winter coat falls out... i'm super lucky with clover, he only really sheds much for those two times, and because his fur is pretty short, but dense, it isn't to crazy of an experience, i'm able to manage it pretty easily with a furbuster brush lol, the cat on the other hand, sheds year round, though more in the fall and spring... he doesn't like the fur buster...

Shadow sheds heavily twice a year. He doesn't have a very thick undercoat in the spring / summer so the fall shedding season isn't as bad as the spring shedding season. I dread the spring one when he's losing that heavy winter undercoat.

Bea sheds twice a year, more heavily in the spring than the fall. She sheds her undercoat in the fall and her winter coat comes in fairly late because of the high temperatures of where I live.
