Shih-tzu's have this problem quite a bit..You can't feed them anything that has red yeast or, beet pulp in it or it will stain their faces and beards. I'm on Angel eyes right now with my two, but I've only been doing it about 2 weeks, so Now sure about the results, but my other tzu friends rave about it..

I steered clear of it for awhile because my vet is Anti-Angel eyes..His theory is that Angel Eyes contains Tylan, which is a mild antibiotic, and he doesn't want dogs to be 'constantly' on antibiotics, for fear that if they DO get sick and need an antibiotic that they will have developed an immunity to it..However, other shih-tzu people's vets have said that its not the same type of Antibiotic, so it shouldn't be a big deal..I'll let you know how the Angel eyes does for my two..I'm using it mainly for tearing, and not tear stains, as Sawyer & Payslee face is already dark in those places so the staining is not that big of a deal, but they both constantly tear, so I'm seeing if the AE helps with that..

I'm not sure if they should smell. Tasha's never has, but I've never tried to smell them. Maybe ask your vet or groomer?

I think it's normal for long-haired dogs to have eye boogers that smell a bit. My lab's short-haired, so never built up enough to matter or to smell, but I would remove my bichon's eye boogers during her baths, and they did have a distinct smell. My bichon had more tear-staining issues when she was a puppy, though. I had to wipe her eyes manically. As she got older, the staining wasn't so bad, although she still did get some eye boogers.

Question: any way to get rid of slobber stains along the muzzle of a long-haired dog? My bichon had some muzzle staining, but not so much to bother me, but I saw these photos of large dogs with staining, and it's pretty obvious. Do the products for tear staining work for the muzzle too?

I would think if the Paul Mitchell products were safe enough for their eyes and ears, it would be okay to use them around their mouths. They have awesome tooth and gum wipes too.
