Dry fur

Hi there! I am wondering if anyone has a Weimaraner? My beautiful Wei Miya has suddenly developed spots on her coat and her fur is a bit dry. We have a special shampoo and are using that, but wondered wht can help a dry coat? She is brused regularly, so it is not that. Hmm.... Nothing wrong with her thankfully though!

Best ideas I have are food allergies, needs a higher quality food, or thyroid issues. Special shampoo from the vet? Like they think she may have some topical issue?

You could do something like add oil to make the coat nicer-but rather then mask it you'll want to figure out what the cause is.

It could be parasites or allergies-so a trip to the vet is in order first before you try diet changes.

And it could be diet related-so look at your food-what are you feeding her?

I agree a trip to the vet is best then depending on what they say go from there. I know when I got Charlie a little over a month ago he had really bad itchy dry skin my vet said it was due to the food he was getting feed not being good food(the place I got him from was feeding kibbles and bits mixed with science diet). I have since switched him to Taste of the Wild and he loves it and his coat is so much better and he is not itching like crazy.

totally, this is a possible symptom of a bigger issue, like allergies and thyroid, which have already been mentioned... has she been in to see the vet yet?

Yes, she went to the vet. It started as random dark spots (weird!) and they couldn't figure out anything that was wrong with her. And then we got this shampoo on the second visit. She is fine health wise as she had a check up then, and everything is good. She is 8 now. Her food is science plan, mixed with fresh cooked chicken.

Just on her back too, a bit dry. Poor baby, but it's not itchy or anything either.

Mystery!!

Try putting her on a grain free diet.

I just saw a dog yesterday that I hadn't seen since November. In November his skin was awful, his hair was patchy and he just looked pretty bad!

Yesterday when I saw him, his hair has grown mostly all the way back, his eyes are bright and shiny and he was feeling fine! I asked what they did. Went grain free. HUGE help to this dog!

If there is no health concern (after meeting with the vet) and it's not a food issue, you can add a teaspoon of fish oil in your dog food. You can find it at the supplementary section of a pet supply store.

You can also use a "Zoom Groom" it is made by Kong. It is a rubber tipped brush that helps to loosen up dead skin & hair and stimulate the natural oils in their skin.

Yeah, im sure your vet told you differently which is why you are using it, but Science Diet isnt a very good food (despite being vet recommended). That could very well be a contributor to the dry skin, assuming there are no underlying health issues.

a bath with high quality shampoo and conditioner would be beneficial. if you dont have something high quality (if you bought it at a grocery store or pet something, its probably not very good), then take the dog to a groomer. after 2-3 baths, the dry skin should look better.
