Best detangler?

Hi!

Boris is a shih tzu and I keep his hair very long (back is about 5 inches long now, tail twice that...) I brush him regularly, so he usually doesn't tangle. People ask me all the time if I just had him groomed, but it's just regular maintenance.

We have enjoyed nice weather the last few days, and Boris and I have taken long walks. However, long haired white dog + melting snow + dirty streets = very very very dirty dog. Seems like the activity also made his hair matt on his legs. I've given him baths, but last grooming took nearly two hours (bath, brushing, drying) because I took forever to (delicately) undo the matts. However patient and wonderful he is, it mustn't have been very pleasant for the little guy!

If this happens again this spring, I would need a very effective detangling product to lessen the discomfort. I used some of my conditioner last time, but I'm not sure that's very good for his coat.

Any suggestions?

I usually spray Vellus conditioner, dilute 1:64 before brushing. one friend swears by #1 all system detangler. another friend tried the vellus detangler spray but says its just like a leave-in conditioner, so she was not satisfied, she also said not to use vellus satin cream, it makes the hair sticky (makes dirt stick to the coat too). I am still waiting for my crown royale detangler, will let you know how it goes. but if its snow (wet), i guess the water makes the mats set and there fore harder to untangle, how about wrapping the hair before walking outside?

For really bad spots like your describing I use the same conditioner I use on my hair (Dove)on Apollo. Put it on, rub it in, let it sit for a couple minutes, carefully start working on the bad spots, rinse thuroughly.
