Question What are your top quality foods?

Hi guys!

I'm willing to go ahead and try something new. I've been reading about food quality and maybe what I was taught as a vet-tech student is a little bit passé and I need an update... I found out that there are local stores selling food like orijen. I'm willing to give one of those foods a try and see how my pup does on them. I'd like to know what your top quality foods are so I can make a better choice...

I feed TOTW (taste of the wild). Orijen is good as well. I would try something with no chicken in it (I dont know if they even make chicken formulas). Also just make sure you slowly introduce the food by mixing a small amt in with her food now and gradually increasing the new food while decreasing the old food.

No worries about the gradual introduction pawzaddict, I do believe that's one of the things I learned in vet tech school that is still valid hehehe

Found out that the same place that sells Orijen also sells Taste of the Wild and Natura products locally (Evo and Innova.). I can also find Natural Balance locally. Still no idea what I should choose.

I know how you feel. I don't know what to feed my newly adopted schnorkie, Stella.
SO many choices out there and we all just want to do what's best for our furbabies, right? We want them to stay healthy and be happy. I've searched 'dog food ratings comparison' web sites, other forums and I'm still confused. My Jasmine was on Beneful (saw it had a very poor rating) for years with no health issues until my husband decided that he had to share everything he ate with her. Then the weight gain, the pancratitis.

I'd like to find 'samples' before I spend a fortune on a bag of food to see how she reacts to it. Right now, Stella is on Beneful and loves it. Very energentic. But am looking for a more grain free food.

Wish you success in your search.

Hi jasminesmom!

My pup is on medical development and is really doing well on it, but he's been getting tear stains and it has been mentioned on this forum that better quality/grain-free food helps prevent them.

You're right, it's really hard to choose. I don't really mind the price I pay for the food as long as it's good for Boris, so I'm wondering what's best...

Update

I went to the local store which carries all those food brands and looked around, also discussing grain-free feeds with the shop owner. He advised against Orijen for smaller dogs, saying that, although it is a really great top quality food, it's very high protein contents cause concern with small breed's digestion. He says he doesn't want to sell it to dogs under 30 lbs (Boris is 8.3 lbs!)

I looked at Taste of the Wild, Nature's Variety, Wellness, Acana, Evo and a number of others as well. I distrust anything with "Holistic" on it and discarded the allergy-free formulas 'cause Boris doesn't seem allergic to anything so far. Since Acana is made by the same company as Orijen, I put it aside too. I also put aside Wellness because we gave my dog a Wellness treat as he came in the store and he vomited it 5 minutes later. I'd never seen him vomit, so I figured that might not be the best choice for him.

The I set out to read and compare the labels and smell the bags (I know...) I finally went with Evo red meat formula, small bites. The pet shop owner said the brand had been around long enough that the recipe was stable, compared to Orijen which modified it's protein content recently. Also I smelt the evo fish formula bag and it really really smelled of fish, so I liked that. I didn't buy that particular flavour however for two reasons: I personally get really nauseous from anything that smells like fish (I don't want my pup to have fish breath!) and also because they didn't have the small bites available at the store.

I put a tiny amount if the new kibble in his bowl and he ate it all, so I suppose he likes the taste. I'll convert him to it slowly as we finish his puppy food bag... I'll let you know how it goes and if it seems to help with the tear stains and his dry coat!

First conclusion: that food must really, really smell good. I left the bag on the kitchen counter as Boris and I went to visit friends, and the cat - whose bowl was full - tore through the bag and had himself a snack. Ooh boy, that litter box is gonna see some interesting poop in the next few days!!
