If the plastic you are storing it in is food grade, you're safe. But a trash can or any old plastic bucket is not food grade. I use a Vittle's Vault, which is food grade and airtight.

Conatiners and bags need to be air tight.

Not sure who you were refering too WVU Dog Lover? But to answer your question, I use the Glad zipper lock freezer bags.

I'm assuming the bucket we'll be getting is food grade, its from my hubby's resteraunt he works at, used to store coleslaw (so it better be food grade haha)

re-use my old smaller sealed bag

I had an old used up Royal Canin small 5 lbs resealable bag along with my new resealable Orijen puppy 5.5 lbs bag. When that one is done with I will buy a big bag and store them in those two resealable bags

Even a food safe plastic will accumulate a build up of dust and ick (technical term here) unless you wash it out thoroughly between refills. Sorta like using a plastic dish. That and dogs can develope plastic allergies. Go fig. I have had a number of clients at the kennel that make sure I cover the edge of the styrene door flap because their dogs are plastic allergic and develope rashes or blisters contacting it.

Very true-it's like everyone uses those reusable grocery bags? And now they are getting ecoli poisoning because they are dirty. Plastic bags aren't technically cleaner by virtue but you throw them out (or reuse them for dog poop) so even though the resuable bags are food grade-they get dirty and carry bacteria

So maybe a monthly bleaching of the container (or virkon if you have it) would be in order?

Currently I only buy the 7 KG bag because its small enough to fit in my cupboard, but I would love the buy the huge bags. What do you use for food storage?

these are pretty cool they store 50 pounds
