I have two dogs Maggie is a Hound mix she weighs about 60 lbs she is a very tall dog and leggy, and a year and a half. My other dog is Axel he is a pittie mix, 45lbs and 11 months old. Both are altered, and I am feeding them Verus, the adult life stages, chicken and brown rice. AFter having a long bought with Maggie having diarehha issues for many months and having her on Wellness, Blue, 4 Health and then finally Verus , Verus is the only thing that has kept her solid so we are sticking to it.

To my point I feel they are an ok weight but could do to gain a few pounds less then five. Axel has some kind of little bug where he threw up and had the runs for one day and then was fine but after that he looked sssooo skinny to me, and I dont think it is right to have him look skinny with one bad day. I feel that I can put a few pounds on them and they will not be over weight at all. Should I add something to the food, or should I put them back on puppy food to put some weight on them or is it to late? I am not changing the food since it was so bad for Maggie with the runs, I dont want to do that to her again. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If they are good eaters I would simply feed a bit more. If not you could add something to their food (canned or even homemade) to entice them to eat more.

I was told my dog Marty was too fat by his vet, I disagree, anyway I was putting oatmeal in his meatloaf I cook for him. I was told at natural dog store that oatmeal is good for dog that need to again weight . You could try using cooked oatmeal instead of rice and see if that helps. I use the old fashion oatmeal . I stopped feeding Marty oatmeal and use yams in place for his fiber.

Can you post pics of your dogs? Side views and from the top?

So, I agree with Cali that I'd just feed a bit more.

That being said, often times owners think their dogs are skinny when, in fact, they are an ideal weight. This is because soooo many dogs are overweight/obese that our views are skewed.

My mom once got upset because someone made a comment at her that Holly was too skinny. Holly is a PERFECT weight, but these people just don't know what a "fit" dog looks like anymore.
