Treat Recipes

Does anyone have some good treat recipes that might be cheaper and make more than you can buy in the store that you wouldn't mind sharing?

Also, where can I buy liver?

Well Okay I confess- since I keep a kibble food in the house as a back up ( event of sudden hardship like losing power or who knows what.. ) what I have done is this- take that kibble food ( wellness is what I store a bag of just in case), grind it in a blender- add egg, molassas, peanut butter, chicken livers and roll it out on a cookie sheet thin. Then cut it with a pizza slicer and cook at 250 degrees for about 10 minutes- POOF- INSTANT cookies.. LOL ..
I also for shows take chicken livers- add a little butter to a pan and dry fry then ( looks like pattae' and use that.) But my favorite training tool treats are cheerios.. LOL.. They are small, easy and quickly gone, and later a pass at the nose of the dog they think " hmm must have eaten it.." lol

Yes they are on raw diet but after we watched the katrina thing, since then I have a back up. Then add ice storms are common in Va. and you loose power- while we have a generator for the freezer it would be hard to do raw. Add if we did have evact and hince why my van is soooooo big. To put all the dogs, and us and baggage..
I believe in raw diet. Been using it since 1984 and proud of it! But sometimes for travel, camping etc, well you have to have another route- so poof a good kibble but ONLY if I have too ( and reluctantly at that..)

So you think RAW is healthier than Kibble? I was considering that but being so new I thought I would start with a good kibble until I get more experience. I am feeding Kelsey and Kimber Blue Buffalo... I looked a wellness but there is now where local to buy it.

YES I DO!!! In spades... Without a doubt! Wellness I can live with. At least no ethoxyquin etc and mostly meat based.. I believe in raw, have since I started and I will say- you can a raw fed dog from a kibble dog- anyyyyyyyyyy day of the year- Look at the muscle in my dogs- even though juveniles- Look at it! You can even see it through the coat. Its the raw diet. The only commerical raw diet I like K9 cravings- and you should be able to get it living in MD. It is expensive but FANTASTIC! BUT REMEMBER- you feeding weight of the dog- not cups so it works out to be the same.

The reason I make some home made treats is the ones in the store have tons of chemicals in them and artificial flavor and color.

There is one brand I like-Natures medley I think...it's whole food not extra ingredients. So the ingredient listing is like : Duck, sweet pototoes.
That's it!
I obviously can't remember what they are called b/c I cannot find it online

Anyways I make two kinds of treats, and they are easy.
I put the stuff in a blender (Whatever stuff I want, in whatever amounts. Carrot is usually the base)

Then I either:

add oats/flour/bread to make it doughy and bake it to make cookies

or

poor it into small cups to make popsicles.

No need to worry about proportions as it's not a full diet just treats, and dogs don't care what it looks like. Honestly I just chuck it all in the blender.

Foods you CANNOT use: Avacado, grapes or raisins, onion, tomatoe, chocolate, licorice, caffeine.

Use garlic sparingly as it's linked to hemolitic anemia.

No uncooked yeast!

Good foods to use:
Carbs:Sweet potatoe, rice, oats, flour, bread for the carbs.
Veggies and fruits: Most berries, banana, pumpkin, squash, carrots, peas, celery, green pepper, broccoli, apples, melon.
Protein sources; Pretty much all meats are safe and fine, so are eggs. I steer clear of tuna b/c of the mercury content. If your dog is fine with dairy, yogurt and milk are good too.

Here's an article on wikihow I wrote on a simple dog recipe:

How to Make Simple Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits - wikiHow

Another one Tasha likes is cheesy beef dog treats:

1 and 1/2 c. of whole wheat flour
1 and 1/4 c. grated/shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 c. of vegetable oil
1 tbsp of water at a time (more on this later)
1 tbsp of beef boulion grandules

* Preheat oven to 375 Fahrenheit
* Mix together all ingredients saving water for last.
* Add 1 tbsp of water at a time until your dough gets to the right consisitency you want. I don't honestly remember how much water I add, so that's why I tell you 1 tbsp at a time. :P
* Roll it out, cut it out, and bake itt untill lightly brown. You can follow the same instructions on the simle peanut butter dog treats, just different recipe. :P
