I personally think if you are going to cook for your dogs daily you should consult a professional in the matter. It can be damaging if your pet does not get the right amounts of all the nutrition they need. I do not believe there is a best dog food as different dogs react differently to different food sources. LOL thats a lot of differents!

I think that all the recalls lately you would have to agree there is a problem with dog food. I started cooking for my dog because I could not find a dog food that agreed with his stomach, and I tried different brands, different meats ,no grains you name it I tried it . His stomach gurgled and pinged every morning for over a year. So I got a book by a well respected vet and cooked. There are plenty of books out there to choose from written by vets that tell you how to cook safely for your pets. The dog food companies have everyone scared to death that we might screw up and kill our dogs , but who was it that just killed 1000s of pets. I have been doing this for years and have not had a sick dog yet. Granted you have to know what a well balanced meal is but as I say there are books. Some how my great grandmother kept her dogs alive for 20 years by feeding them what she ate, so I have no fear that I can do the same. When I mentioned HALO it was something I would try if I had to use dog food . There are not any other premium dog foods that I have not tried.

No sorry I do not agree...I agree that the cheaper foods are more risk to being contaminated... I feed Kirklands and TOTW and have no issues.

This is my point...as long as verified and reviewed articles and books are being used (I still suggest finding a specialist).

Funny my parents have had the same success feeding food bought from a local grocery store... DOG food. They do randomly give human food to the dogs, mainly left overs and no cooked bones. Their dogs have NEVER had health issues and have lived way past the standard life expectancy.

To each their own, it does not bother me what people decide, as long as they are making sure if they do RAW feedings or HOME COOKED meals they are providing the dog with its necessary needs, and if they choose other foods to make sure their pets are healthy.

Diamond food makes both of those foods there have been recalls on diamond of some kind almost every year
2008-A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit about certain Diamond Pet Food products. The settlement provides for an amount of $3.1 million to pay consumers who purchased recalled Diamond Pet Food products, and to compensate dog owners whose dogs were injured by eating Diamond Pet Food products.
may 2006 -COLUMBIA, S.C. - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that at least 76 dogs nationwide are believed to have died as a result of eating contaminated Diamond Pet Foods.

May 22, 2007. Diamond Pet Foods has expanded its recall to include Nutra Nuggets Lamb Meal and Rice Dry Formula for Dogs with "Best Buy" dates of October 9-10, 2008, due to melamine cross-contamination resulting from the food being produced with other pet foods made for Natural Balance. The Nutra Nuggets dry dog food is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods and has tested positive for melamine and caused kidney problems in at least four dogs in California.

So...you are saying human foods NEVER get recalled? lol It happens. If a recall is going on I dont eat that food item, if a recall happens when my pets are eating that food, they wont continue eating it.

FYI do you ever read snopes? That only happened in 2006 (early 2007) and since then it has all been false. Also It says Kirkland was not effected and there is no mention of TOTW on the lists.

Just curious, when you're feeding strickly a home cooked/prepared diet for your dogs, (without adding any type of kibble) how does one go about making sure your calcuim and phospherous levels are appropriate and what formula do you use to figure out how much your specific dog needs when it comes to omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which are essential?
Would love to know more about how to balance and measure these things as to avoid things like skeletal abnormalities in large breed pups and how to ensure they are getting everything they require to build lean muscle mass without damaging their joints and avoid having them consume any more carbohydrates than necessary.
Any help or links would be appreciated.
Thanks

I use a product thats called Platinum Performance™ Canine | PlatinumPerformance It is well balanced And you give it per pound. It has omega 3&6 in it plus branched chain amino acids. I also use ground flax seed on the food I add 2 tablespoons on the food. I started with a book by Dr Pitcairn's A complete guide to natural health. I have since changed to a vegetarian diet I just don't trust the meat anymore as a healthy thing for my dogs. That is my preference not for everyone. The beans and legumes I use have about 21 % protein then I use a variety of whole grains and vegetables that add to the protein level. I have 2 dogs and neither of them have any skin or health issues. My youngest had distemper when we rescued her at 8 weeks with that book and home cooking she lived. She is over 3 years now and healthy and happy and running like the wind.

Just so nobody gets confused...diet does not just save a dog from distemper. My bf's dog had distemper and survived with no issues and was not on a special diet. I only mention it because we dont need people thinking they need to switch their dogs diet to save it from distemper.
