By products on dog food

Hi I'm new to this site and well I had a question for everyone who's willing to answer. I just got a puppy Irish Setter and well I just want him to eat the best of the best. I keep hearing that by products in dog food is bad for the dogs, yet, even the best of dog foods, like Eukanuba, has by products. Is it true that dog food with by products is unhealthy for dogs? If so, what would you recommend for my little guy?

Eukanuba isn't anywhere near the best- you pay for the name rather than the quality.

Taste of the Wild is great, and reasonably priced. Also Wellness is good, Halo, brands like that.

Taste of the wild is excellent, as is Wellness CORE and Orijen.

Look online, there is a dog food analysis web site.

Congrats on the Irish Setter puppy - I grew up with them, quite scatty but extremely beautiful.

It's okay, but definitely not top of the line. It's actually the lowest quality nutro product.
Lack of by-product isn't the only criteria you should look for in a quality dog food.

Ditto Cali. TOTW is great! If you have a costco near you they carry kirklands or natures domain (depending on your store) so if money is a concern these are pretty cheap

Those are all excellent foods people are listing. Here is a website that does good analysis. You can learn a lot about dog foods just by reading their reviews. You can look up foods you are interested in, or just browse the foods by category, 6 star, 5 star etc.

Usually you cannot get the better foods at the grocery store or even box - type pet store. You may need to find a more local pet store that carries them. Maybe people have suggestions of places to find them?

Enjoy your puppy! To me there is nothing better in the world than a puppy!
This is one of my favorite puppy books.

If you like books, maybe other people have recommends too.

Welcome to the forum. There are wonderful resources here about training and solving problems, so take a look around, and don't be shy about asking for help too. As wonderful as puppies are, they have their frustrating moments. There are some amazing experts here who can give you tips. I just got here a few weeks ago and have been absorbing stuff like crazy.

I grew up with them. He's my fourth. They're great family dogs. I wouldn't say they're scatty though. I'd say they're more clumsy. They're smart little guys but very stubborn as puppies. But when they grow up, they're just as loyal as a golden retreiver. They love human company too.
