Orijen puppy food?

Hi everyone. I spent a good hour at the store the other day trying to decide what kind of puppy food to buy.

My 4 year old shepherd mix eats Acana Grasslands, she does better on it than Orijen for some reason. She was on Acana Puppy and Junior as a pup and Acana Pacifica until I my store was out one day and I put her on Grasslands.

NOW New puppy
My new puppy will be coming home in 5 weeks (3 weeks now). He is a red mini poodle mix. Will be somewhere between 10- 15 ish pounds when grown. I bought a bag of Orijen puppy food but I'm worried it will be too rich or have too much protein. Does anyone have experience feeding Orijen to small breed puppies? I have NO experience with small dogs.

Thanks! (PS NAME SUGGESTIONS? I was thinking Leo or Finn, but those aren't very original...)

I know a few people who feed Orijen to their yorkies but I've noticed that most people with small breeds tend to go with the Acana (not as high in protein). If I had a dog like your shepherd mix currently on the Acana Grasslands, I'd probably feed that to my new pup too (being that the Regional line is an all life stages food). If your new pup does well on the Orijen though and that's what you want to feed, I'd go for it!

Another brand I'd recommend is Fromm. Toki does really well with any of their formulas (especially the grain-free varieties). She's been on grain-free Fromm (I am pretty sure these formulas are ALS) since she was seven months old or so. Fromm does have a puppy formula in their Gold line which I have only heard good things about.

I don't have anything to add for Orijen, but I feed Fromm which is what toki recommended. I have a 9 month cavalier king charles, and she does great on it. It was recommended by the breeder and after doing some research on it we decided to stick with Fromm and its been great. We fed the puppy gold at first and then we switched her to the chicken a la veg.

Zocha has been fed Acana since she was weened, so I went with it, but now due to the Plant fire, Acana supplies are down in Victoria so I went to Orijen on advice from my Breeder and noticed no difference, but she is not a small breed dog either. Seems from all the literature I read last weekend the ingredients that are "in" either food are the same.
And I like Finn, Casey .

Did that really happen?! That is REALLY good to know. I also live in Vic, but did not hear about this. I just bought a new bag a few days ago at Bosley's for my 4 year old Shepherd mix. So Orijen and Acana are both by Champion, and only Acana had a plant fire? I'm guessing different facilities. Thanks for the info

Also, pup will be 8 weeks when coming home! I'm nervous about having a small breed but have done my research as best I can. As the pup's get older I can switch pups if need be as their personalities develop.

Yeah Zocha's on Large Breed Puppy, and Bosley's was sold out totally, I am fairly central to three of them, but I called Langwood, Sidney. Oh I guess I'm fairly central to 4 of them I always forget the downtown one. Anyway I ended up getting Orijen Large Breed Puppy and haven't noticed a difference but with her it's food, the fact there is more meat no grain is probably a plus. Apparantly a delivery was coming Today, but they had no idea what was coming, but apparantly it will be back to normal by Jan 8th. As for facilities I think both have multiple facilities, but not sure how many, one had a fire Oh well my dogs fit and healthy that's all I care about

I had Remy on the Large Breed Adult, but I like the grain free Acana Regional Formulas- which are all life stages so I guess you could feed them to a puppy! Orijen has not agreed with her so I stick to rotating between regional formulas, hopefully I can still get it. I know they sell it at A Pet's Life too, but their stuff is horrendously over-priced and it`s irks me (same toy at walmart was 1/5 the cost as it was there, even though I prefer not to shop at walmart). I would try the one on Shelbourne for the puppy formula, I'm fairly sure I saw it there when I looked the other day at puppy food. If you want that one again that is!

Thanks for letting me know about that!

Yeah Shelbourne was out, one of my first stops, I bounce between there and Royal Oak the most because the knowledge is better at Royal Oak. She seems fine on the Orijen, we'll see after this bag. I was actually specifically using the Acana for the grain, I know it sounds stupid because my 4 1/2 month old is 60 lbs, but she is still a bit underweight so I was using the grain for a bit more starch I plan on switching when she is grown but for now I wanted the extra calories. And no don't worry I'm not the typical North American with a Skewed sense of a fat dog looking health, she is actually really skinny especially in the back half. But a working Shepherd so she goes all day
