Orijen??

I don't have many posts here yet so I didn't want to go about hijacking people's threads so I thought I'd start my own.

I feed my dog Arden Grange (one of the best kibbles in the UK, but it still contains grains) one day and raw the next.

He is obviously getting a lot of protein from the raw meat, so say I were to swap his kibble to Orijen would that be too much protein on top of the raw meat?

It shouldn't be-dogs are meant to have a lot of protein; excess protein is broken down into sugar if it's not used so if there is too much you'd notice weight gain. I would highly recommend Orijen

agreed! Orijen is the number 1 dry kibble in my book, it also won the pet food of the year, look here, www.orijen.ca/orijen/CPF-Pet_Food_of_the_Year.pdf

my dogs are on the puppy large breed and are doing great! shiny coat, bright eyes, etc, i am actually going to move them over to the Regional Red today (in transition) ofcourse as part of their 3 month rotation.

Mikey, you've said something similar in this post Adventures in dog food, but in my post Useful information from Orijen I quote the following directly from Orijen...

Quote:
Unlike carbohydrate, protein is what dogs are evolved for. Protein is essential for the body and is also used by dogs as a source of energy. When present in excess, protein leaves the body through normal elimination functions and is not stored as fat like carbohydrate.
I guess I'm a little confused...do you know where you read that?

Orijen may be number one, but good luck finding it! It's sold out just about everywhere. Word is they are backlogged for 9 months!

LOL I don't know if that's true...at least in UK I can easily buy 13 bags every month! Not that hard to find it here!

I have heard this tho!

I think it's a Canadian brand, so it's surprising they would ship it overseas before filling the US's needs. Anyways lucky you! =)

You should get into the import-business, but tons of Orijens overseas and sell it in the US. =)

I haven't used Orijen but I have heard it's a very good food. Arden Grange is good too but as you say it has grain in it.

If you are looking for a grain free food take a look at Fish4Dogs. They are fish based foods that have potato as the carbohydrate source. They don't use any preservatives or anything like that.

Sorry I'm late!

Oliwa-you want to know where I read how protein is broken down into sugar?

In University in my text books

is quite simply wrong but that's not really the whole story

-it is complicated, but yes protein is broken down into usable energy (your body can literally digest muscle if you don't eat) but it does build muscle tissue-if you are exercising and if you aren't eating an excess amount.

Here's more info, this is a simple explanation but succinct

Nutrition, Does Excess Protein Turn to Fat? An Anatomy Lesson
Quote:

What happens to the protein:
It is broken down into building blocks known as peptides. Then, it is further broken down and it becomes amino acids... Excess amino acids are converted to fats and sugars and follow the paths described above.
You can google whereever you like, but don't detour onto hinky diet sites (like atkins etc) which claim you will never gain weight eating protein and fat-just look for bio explanations of protein breakdown Hope this helps!
