I agree that its up to the individual. I could leave food out till I was blue in the face, and mine wouldn't eat it..They just aren't hungry. I feed them snacks in the am, and afternoon, and then they have a full meal at night..They usually finish it up, but not always..They are just not big eaters..However, I think if you have a dog that is hungry, or needs to put on weight that would be fine..

My first dog was free fed. She was the kinda dog that would rarely eat. The only treats she liked was a rawhide and some milkbones. She never seemed to lose weight nor gain it except the initial few weeks we had her from the shelter and she even looked a little pudgy even though she ate so little. What I found funny was she was found a stray so you would think she'd eat everything she could.

My second dog is NOT free fed. She would eat everything in sight and throw it up then re-eat it if she could. Plus, she would end up pooping all over the house if she ate that much. I know this because she has gotten into food before, then would poop in the house after that. Also, she has a conformation to many dog prone to bloat do, and like said above, it could be hazardous to her health if she ate that much (plus she'd be really really fat )

As far as training goes with food, I do on occasion tell her to sit/stay and go about pouring her food into her dish and when I tell her, then she can go eat. I think that is a good way to teach a dog to leave people foods alone (when you are there at the very least).

I agree with all of the above, it depends on the dog mostly, and the owner's preference too.

I can't free feed. Scotty and Tigger would eat until they blew up. Rascal eats what he wants and then quits. Scotty is on steroids and he is always hungry. Tigger is just a little piglet. lol

Well,

If you are potty training a puppy you should put it out in the morning if you can a little at noon and then at night . If it is a adult potty trained dog you can leave it out all day!

By free feeding you dog, they learn that they can have food whenever they want, not when you(the pack leader) allows them to there for makeing them move up in the "pack", bringing you down. this can cause isues with dominance and disrespect. just my opinion, but whatever floats your boat. I just suggest feeding by a schedule.

Actually dogshowkid-I'll let you read, but that's a myth. Letting your dog eat when he's hungry does not mean he doesn't respect you.

Even at the simplest level that logic is flawed. Does the dog think the food magically ends up there? Or that he himself found it so he's the pack leader? Nope-dogs SEE us put the food in the bowl-whether they scarf it then or later.

^^agreed. I was scared to let Bella free feed at first only because I've had dogs in the past scarf down whatever was put in front of them. So I use to put a full days serving in the morning and let her eat that whenever she wanted. Just recently I started filling the bowl completely up and just watching her closely. She now only eats when she wants to and stops when she's full. I'm glad she's a free feeder now, now more worrying about if she's hungry or missing a meal.

That's what I absolutely love about it-I don't have to worry-he'll eat when he needs to

I currently free feed my Papillon. I do measure out the food before I put it in his bowl, but he's free to eat it whenever he's hungry. My dog isn't really food oriented though and wouldn't over-eat dry food, but might if I put wet food down. I'm currently looking for a second dog right now, and probably will have to schedule meals depending on what breed of dog I get and what their appetite is.

I leave kibble out all the time and haven't had a problem with these two. I couldn't do it when I had Caffee, as she would eat it all. Both my guys now are picky eaters, and will only eat the kibble (and it's Taste of the Wild now) if they are very very hungry. I feed twice a day 1/2 cup of kibble mixed with 1/4 can of wet per dog. The Kibble left out is just in case they get hungry, and they are doing find with that. No overeating here...I find myself filling the dog bowl with kibble at the rate of 1 cup every three days or so.

It just going to depend on your dogs.
