I been buying my dog chicken jerky and I checked out the package at the grocery store today and it made in China! I did not buy any more. I will have to go to a pet store that sell natural dog foods . The food could be made in USA but some of the ingredient could come from China.
I posted a similar warning in the Dog training forum. One of my clients purchased a bag of Waggin Chicken Jerky and gave it to her dog. The dog got diarrhea within hours, and she called me to ask what she should do(apparently is was bad enough for her to call). I told her to give the dog Imodium, plenty of water, and no more treats. I asked her to throw the bag away.
We need to spread this warning far and wide. If our government won't stop it, maybe the lack of sales will.
I brought my last dog a rawhide toy and he got sick from it. I just heard on the news last more dogs are getting sick from toys made in China. I can't remember what station I was watching. My new dog would rather play with a stick than a toy. That is fine with me , it safer and free! I don't allow my dog to chew on the stick.
next time have them save the bag (sealed) in a spot where she won't accidently grab it to use, you can report individual cases to the FDA privately (not through a vet) and they'll often ask for the bag of treats or food for testing.
Let's hold our elected officials and any American company(s) this includes Petco, Petsmart, etc. accountable for prioritizing profit and shareholder value over your best friend's well-being.
I do think the Chinese Manufacturers are responsible for this because it is an ongoing trend. All the way back to 2007, dogs and cats have been dying because these manufacturers having been adding a chemical filler called Melamine to not only dog food and treats, but to livestock feed as well. In 2008 nearly 300,000 Chinese people were poisened, 50,000 infants sickened, and 6 infant deaths behind putting this filler(it is a cheap way to simulate protein to food) in food and dry milk. This goes back to 2007, and we are still having this problem today.
Not only do companies like Waggin Train source their treats and food in China, but so do a list of about 12 pet food companies. If the FDA won't do anything about protecting our pets(instead of the companies and lobby their in bed with), then we have to basically financially starve them into doing the right thing.
Oh I hold them responsible too, especially the owning companies that won't manufacture or source from elsewhere, but this isn't a new or occasional problem. It keeps happening, and it doesn't happen (at least not anything close to the same degree) with products made/sourced from other countries. So theres something happening in that one country thats causing this problem.
I don't think I'd call it totally unregulated, but it is less regulated than the human food industry, which occasionally doesn't seem regulated enough (pink slime anyone?).
Not really. Various FOIA requests showing the test done and treats listed, but dispite big uproar over the the most listed brands a couple weeks ago if you actually read the lists there were to many variables to honestly narrow it down and say that those brands were the problem.
It's not just a matter of buying pet treats or food for that matter, made in China. If it says made in the USA on a bag of food or treats it doesn't mean that company hasn't used raw materials imported from China.
I know the food and treats that I am feeding my pets are made in the USA, sourced from the USA, and never been recalled!
