Healthy Wet Food? (Side Q re Kongs)

Are there any wet foods that arent totally unhealthy and bad for dogs? I guess Im asking about whether there is a best of the worst?

Diva isnt eating her dry food as much Id like. Im wondering if there are any wet foods that i can mix in or even supplement once or twice a week for her dry food. I know most of it is crap and Im kind of looking for a middle of the road brand (cant afford too much as Ive kind of fallen on hard times) but I do not want to and will not give her alpo or the like. Any thoughts? (I took her to the vet last week and she received a clean bill of health)

Also, I just dont get the kong. I gave it to her with a few cookies inside and once she got the easy one out, she gave up on trying to get the rest out. Then I put some peanute butter inside. She was interested for a second and then gave up. Am I doing something wrong or is she just not into it?

I believe its called Healthy Extensions. its an organic type food in chicken flavor. we are on our second bag (1st one was 30 lbs, this one is 40). At first she seemed fine with it. We boil some chicken and throw it in and we do the raw egg twice a week with the dry and the chicken. She was super into it and now she hardly touches it. Like I said, we took her to the vet and she was given a clean bill of health (still a little underweight).

Today we threw in some wet food and she slopped it up and licked the bowl and was searching for more. But I think its crappy food (Beneful). Even if Im going to do it just a few times a week Id really prefer to give her whats best.

Thnks for any advice you can provide.

I prefer to add canned salmon to food-it's just plain old fish with no preservatives or fillers so I think that's healthier for them.

Other things you can add to entice eating is milk or yogurt (provided they tolerate dairy-some dogs are intolerant as some people are), small amounts of cooking grease (like after you've cooked hamburger or bacon), broth from soup (ensure that there is not high salt content, garlic or onion powder or onions etc used) etc.

Sorry-and on the kong-some dogs don't like them. Mikey took quite a while to want to work for the treats inside. Mandy never liked hers (it rolled in front of her once, she got weirded out and would never go near it again).

You can actually do some awesome things with them though-try that before giving up. You can cook them in the microwave (try some egg and cheese) and they are dishwasher safe. Check out KONG Company - Your Pet Will Love You For It for recipes.

Something someone on here taught me to help fill up the dog that is not bad for them is plain oatmeal. Not sure if it will help with the weight gain or not. What did your vet say about her weight and how to increase it?

I agree with Mikey (tho I did not know about salmon!) add something like yogurt. Does your dog like egg yolks? Mine get one everytime I make breakfast so at least 3 times a week if not more. If she likes it try giving her one each morning, its got a good amount of fat in it.

Canned salmon is awesome! Much less mercury then tuna (very very small amount) and it's an oily fish that's very good for them ( I have to say this...raw salmon is very not good for a dog though-cooked or tinned only!)

Good call on the egg yolk! Mikey gets one egg over easy when we do breakfast-not as much as pawz's lucky dogs-maybe once a month lol

I only eat egg whites so Id rather not waste LOL I like the cooked salmon idea!!!! I buy too much salmon sometimes for me to eat so I know I can give them the rest just nothing on it right? I normally just cut up a lemon and put it on my portion as I eat it.

Yeah but depends what you put on it. I think a lot of people have the idea that dogs can't have human food and that its bad for them. Their are a few things they can't have-but really-there is nothing wrong with people food-and in fact real whole food is good for them -that being said I've not eaten meat in 16 years now nor have I ever eaten seafood -so I don't know what you put on salmon but likely the sauce or whatever is ok in a small infrequent dose

nothing to really add to the wet food thing, except cottage cheese...

for the kong, try putting just a little bit of different things in it for a few days, clover always "liked" his kong, but wasn't really into it at first, ie-he didn't "love" it... now he waits for it every morning in his crate... i really like having something i can give him when i leave that i don't feel he needs supervision for... so far it is the only toy that he hasn't shredded...

i mostly use peanut butter and cream cheese bc they are cheap, but you can also use canned dog food (or salmon ) basically anything that you can "smear" that is safe for dogs to eat. clover doesn't like canned pumpkin on it's own, but i know other dogs that do... or mushed bananas, baby food, you can also try putting stuff in and freezing it....
