Home made dog treats for fund raiser

I figured since this was about dog treats this was a good place to put this. My 10 year old daughter wanted to donate money to a couple of shelters/rescues in the area. Her idea (all her own mind you) was to make dog cookies, she has called them Puppy Love Cookies and sell them. I found a recipie online and we made peanut butter dog cookies and she has so far raised $132.

I do have a question. Do you think it is necessary to put a natural perservative like Vitamin E in them to help keep them at a longer shelf life or do you think by cooking them long enough to remove as much moister as possible that would be enough? Also if I should put the Vit. E in it how much should I use per batch? I've been looking around online but have not found anything useful. Hopefully someone here will have some good advice.

Oh the money so far is going to The Humane Society of CT and Animal Friends of CT.

i don't really know the answer to your question... i usually feed out all the homemade treats so fast that it doesn't matter, or i keep them in the freezer...

anyway, that is a lovely idea your daughter had... really cool

Thanks Fawkese, She is a great kid and has such a big heart. She feel really good about helping and if it was up to her we would bring home every animal from the Humane Society that they have.

You have such a great kid. What if she skips that preservative thing and bake her cookies as the recipe says? Then you daughter can use it as a highlight of her product... "No preservative". Just my 2 cents.

Thanks, she really is a great kid. The first batches we made, ok if you want to call 10lbs of flour a first batch, we did them as was directed. I just wanted to make sure they would last for longer than a week or so. I have a friend that is going to place them at the kennel she works at and collect money for her. I picked up the cutest little party bags today. They have hearts all over them goes great with the name of the cookies.

From the research I've been doing if I cook them long enought to remove as much moisture as possible I beleive they will have a 6 month shelf life. Anyone think that is over estimating them. I'm thinking we will do them in small enough batches not to have to worry about that I just want to make sure. She as well as me would be devistated if any dogs got sick because we were wrong.

Lovely child

Yes-Not only is that something you needn't bother with (Because amounts of preservatives and shelf life are not something you can do at home) but you could put that as the selling point 'no preservatives'

Also if you use all organic stuff you can call them organic too

So I'd put on the label-keep refridgerated just in case

also-you could sell the dough too-as 'put in the freezer and make your own at home' They sell cookies like that for fundraisers (frozen cookie dough) and in a freezer they could certainly last six months

Wow I think that is a great Idea the fozen dough. hmmm just have to think of the best way to package that so it doesn't get freezer burned. I do have pictures to show of her booth she had as well as a picture I took of her with the dog for the flyer we made. Must resize them first so they don't come out huge.
