Why did you choose the breed you own?

*I am sorry if there is already a thread like this, but I could not find one in my search.*

I thought it would be fun to explain to people why you choose the breed you did.

What did you want out of a dog?
What made you sway to that breed?

Basically, why did you end up with a (insert breed here) .

Ooo, Ooo, My turn! I post first!!

Ok, So.. My puppy who is newly named Loekin is a Siberian Husky/Pit Bull mix.

He is EXACTLY what I wanted because I LOVE pits and I also like Huskys alot too!

I was wanting a pure bred pit bull to start with, but changed my mind to a Husky but then couldn't decide which one I wanted. I then came across a litter of Husky/Pit Bull mix puppies! Thats when I picked out Loekin!

I picked him because he is a even mix of the two dogs I wanted.
I wanted a pit bull because believe it or not they are very friendly dogs, as I have read and herd from others. I also like that they are a medium size, and I LOVE the way they look! And I feel bad that these poor dogs get a bad rep. just because of stupid stories and stupid people! Pits can make wonderful dogs and I wanted to prove it! I just fell in love with the breed when I first started to learn about them. And I love the way a husky looks. I love the baby blue eyes, body, curly tail, and stand out colors! They are very pretty dogs. I Like that they are energetic and athletic too! They can also become very close to there owner and be good dogs too!

So I chose Loekin because he is my two favorite breeds of dogs in one little puppy!

I have Aussies and a border collie.
I love how high energy they are, how focused you can ask them to be, and how sensitive they are. They're not typically the goofy klutz type, and I like that. They're smart smart smart and sooo dedicated. They seem to be a bit of a one person type, but honestly I wouldn't have them any other way. I just love my herding breeds!

Fun!!!!

I will start by addressing you elisabeth-I LOVE LOVE LOVE GSD's and hope to own one at some point. It will be tricky to find a good line and good breeder-there are so many health issues (genetic ones) with GSDs (more so then in any other breed) so I'm very nervous -but I really want one.

My first dog-Max-border collie; second Molly Border collie/heeler probably. Mandy is a husky x

And now I have my real first dog (ie. I'm all grown up and he's mine lol) -he's a corgi mix according to the shelter; very likely has heeler. Some other thoughts from people are JRT and beagle and you name it. He's probably mostly a mix of 'short' and 'crazy'

So I didn't choose a breed with him-it was all just about him.

The characteristics I had to go by to choose him were
1) under 18" high as per the neighborhood we live in-no shepherds. rotties, or pits (I know I know...)
2) Dave's specifications: white or light colored, up ears

So he totally fit and we only had to travel 5 hours to adopt a dog who fit all those specifications.

TBH there are certain breeds I do dislike the look of enough to not own (I just don't like poodles or curly coated dogs-sorry to any who own them-it's just me not them!)-and I do prefer large breeds.

But you'd be hard pressed to find a dog I don't like and I hope our next dog is special needs-I don't mind medical problems at all. Dave says he could deal with a three legged dog-so....our next pooch tentatively decided on a Border collie/australian shepherd (mix of either or both) special needs hopefully

Growing up my family always had mutts and I still prefer a mix to a purebred. I used to be the type of person who always poo-poo'ed small dogs calling them yappy little rats. Weeeeellll, (I hope I don't get blasted for this) when our youngest daughter was born (7 years ago) I couldn't take the dog hair in the house anymore (hormones, I guess) so our current two dogs became outdoor dogs. Four years later I wanted a house dog again, but it had to be small and low shedding. So, in doing some research I decided on a poodle mix (either with shih tzu or bichon) and a couple of months later on a visit to the vet with one of our cats, lo and behold, a lady was there with a litter of shih tzu/poodle mixes getting them their first shots. Well, you know what happened and Opal was the perfect match for me and my family. A year later we got Jasper. I wish I had given the small dogs a chance years ago because they are definitely what I prefer now.

I guess I can't answer directly. I don't pick a dog by breed.

Tho size is definetly a consideration. Kiwi is 45lbs and in hindsight she is bigger than I really like...not that I don't love her! I prefer 25lbs and smaller.

that said I do prefer dogs with spitzy features, especially the prick ears, and so far all my dogs have been brown LOL
