Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu Yorkie mix?

This is my little monster, Wicket. He came to me via my sister via a shih tzu breeder in Colorado. He weighs about 9 lbs and is 23 months old. He's AKC certified as a shih tzu.

Here's the deal: Wicket is hyper. He's always moving, running, chasing, playing, etc. He also doesn't have any white on him at all and he can be quite a little terror to strangers walking in the front door. He learns new tricks after two or three repetitions(unlike his new shih-tzu sister, Dixie Bell, who gets lost in our living room...)

My older sister initially purchased him and decided she couldn't handle him; thats how I got him. She says that he is the biproduct of a shih-tzu and yorkie rather than a pure bred Shih Tzu. She claims this because he's so much smaller than other shih tzus, oddly colored, a bit mean, and very active/intelligent.

I say he's full blood. I know he looks odd, but he's AKC certified (surely this means something?)

So- who's right? Me or my sister?

I don't see any terrier in the face. Is there any place the coat is different? I am not a shih tzu person but is that an acceptable color??? Looks all fawn, is that right?

Wicket is a 'liver' colored shih tzu. All I know is that this means his nose and lips are liver colored rather than black. His coloring would be relatively close to a reddish fawn all over. I honestly don't know if it's an allowed color for shih tzus- every other shih tzu I've ever seen has some white on them and he does not.

What do you mean by "AKC certified?" There are several different registrations possible under the AKC, including mixed breed dogs.

Shih Tzus do not have any colour restrictions, nor do they need to have any white markings.

I don't see any yorkie at all. He might just differ from the standard. My Dachshund doesn't use her nose, and loves to training, two things that are odd for the breed. But she's purebred

Ok- I dont know the exact term because my sister still has the papers or what have you, but Wicket has some sort of limited registration. Basically, he's registered as a shih tzu, but his offspring (were he capable of producing them) could not be registered. According to google, this was done by the breeder in order to prevent other people from breeding her pups and taking away her business or some such.

I am, however, convinced. None of you see Yorkie in him (I didn't either) and I know from experience that he has a hunter's instinct more similar to that of a down pillow than a terrior. He's almost certainly just a tiny, undersized shih-tzu with a massive oversized personality.

Ya there is a box the breeder has that they can check mark, full or limited if I remember correctly.

I was just noticing that your dog looks a lot like the dog I just rescued. He was a stray that I got from a shelter, so we don't know his breed for sure. They say he is Shih-Tzu, but I'm not sure. He has a longer nose. He acts a lot like you describe your dog acting. He has tons of energy, fetching balls and going hiking with the horses. He is also on the smaller size, weighing only 7 pounds, although he is still a bit underweight from being a stray. I know this didn't answer your question, but I just thought the similarities were interesting.

My dog Bayleigh is a Yorkie X Shih Tzu cross. She more resembles a yorkie than a shih tzu. I'd say your dog looks full shih tzu. Perhaps he just looks off because he's a color not often seen.

If your dog has AKC papers, he is a purebred Shih Tzu but was sold on a non-breeding contract that is why his pups could not be registered.

Shih Tzu can come in any color, they do not have to have white on them. He looks like a purebred and his size is not unusually small.
