I wish to debunk this thing about the "type of person" who owns a pitbull. First of all I'm a 61 year old 5'2" woman, college educated and quite conservative. I have adopted my second pit bull. The shelters are filled to the brim with these dogs through no fault of their own. My first pit was dog aggressive but the only dog that ever attacked her was a spaniel. My current pit is not dog aggressive at all and a complete people lover. I did not get my dogs to look tough or cool. At my age I have no interest in either of these. They are just dogs that need homes and they are good dogs.

as for DA.

there are many different kinds of DA. the majority of these types are environmentally induced..however..

its generally accepted among geneticists that genes control around eighty percent of a dogs behavior. i have seen DA where the dog exhibits a physical aggressive reaction that is a direct opposite of the communixative cues the dog displays. iow..a dog who acts aggressively in a predatory manner while rhrowing off signals of friendliness. they arent really stressed. the dog is calm..juat exhibiting conflicting behavior. i believe that is what genetic da looks like. i have only met three dogs who did this. out of over a thousand. i think its probably rare. ill let you know when im done
gathering data. im in college studying this stuff. i hope to work with canine behavioral geneticsmore.
this is awesome...can we be friends??? lol...or at least can you teach me all that you learn?

Demographically I believe white, young, women are the most prevalant owners of the breed...I don't remember where I read that tho...

Zim you need to start a tread about how you train your DA pit bull using PR I think people will find it interesting.

I love Pitts too I think they are gorgeous. But the majority of Pitts I see are not living with someone like you. I am not saying that all pitt owners fall under one category but I do believe that many people adopt pitts for the wrong reasons.

If you walk through our shelters the majority of the dogs are Pitts also. It is really sad. I honestly believe with any breed it has more to do with the way they are raised than with genetics. But that is just my opinion. I feel the same way about humans Lol.

its not as simple as one vs the other..nature vs nurture...im saying its both...an you get wildly varying percentages from individual dog to individual dog.

you also have to think of that figure as behavior in total..a massive amount of dog behavior...the direction sparky cocks his leg to pee for example..is purely instinctual..and doesnt nessecarily correlate to external stimulus...external stim beingpeoplle, other dogs etc.

how the dog acts as opposed to why.
