Dingo/Shepherd Mix Dogs.

I was wondering if anybody knows anything about this kind of dog? i am familiar with German Shepherds, as I have had 4 of my own. However, I am not sure of the Dingo part. Does anybody know what the temperament may be like? I am asking because there's one at my local shelter, but don't want to adopt without being educated about the breed.

Not sure. When I asked, the lady just said "the wild kind from down under". Not very helpful info from her at all.

*blink* they think they have an Austalian Dingo mix?? Do you have a link by any chance?

If they actually mean an Ausie Dingo cross, its going to be an extremely primitive type dog. The cross with another breed isn't likely to change this much. This means that although the dog will likely be highly food driven they'll also be very very likely to IGNORE food and training when ever they feel like. Highly independant in the sense that training beyond bare bones basic manners may not mean much to this dog. You can train an awesome recall and it won't mean a thing in real life cause that leaf blew n the wind and that blade of grass moved and.....

They're highly vocal and shouldn't live in housing situations where close neighbors are going to complain about the noise. And noise I do mean, they how, and shreek and yodel....

HUGE escape artists, and often highly distructive.....

I am in Pennsylvania. The shelter didn't have a picture or description on the site about him because they'd just gotten him in. It just said "Toby - Dingo/Shepherd Mix". I called and asked them to send me a picture at least. This is the picture they sent. He's still a very small puppy.

Good advice Ruth.
But I don't see Shepherd in this pup. Just to young to tell what it could be.
Maybe with pictures as he grows.
BUt Dingo?

Ok, I'm going to bet that they were told "mom's a dingo" or something like, and what the person really meant was that mom was a Carolina Dog. They're OFTEN refered to as "dingo" which confuses the heck out of people. More info here: Carolina Dog Breeder American Dingo Dog Breeders Carolina Dogs they're still a primitive, but usually not as hard to keep as an actual Aussie Dingo would be.

Having said that, since you're in PA, there is a SMALL chance that the "dingo" parent was a New Guinea Singing Dog, and in that case refer to my comments above about Aussie Dingos......

Are you going to be able to visit the pup before deciding?

Thank you so much for all of the helpful info, guys. Yes, I just got an e-mail saying they were told that Mother "has a lot of dingo in her".

Yes, DEFINITELY going to meet the little guy before deciding! (:
