Um, from my experience getting a dog when people in your house do not like dogs is not a good idea. It will cause a lot of problems and possibly create tension. That person may always hold some resentment towards you or the dog (my dad got me a puppy when I was 5 against my mom's wishes and she was always grumpy about it; it took her 6 years to like the dog).

If they do not like dogs but are okay with you getting a dog I'd ask them what they would be okay with having around (do they not like that dogs smell, shed, drool, etc?). If you know what they don't like about dogs and what they could like about dogs then you might have a chance with getting a dog they'd be okay with.
Here's a quiz: Dog Breed Quiz - Dog Breed Selector - Goodhousekeeping.com

Great advice-make sure everyone is on board with the dog.

I'd say a golden retriever would steal everyones heart-and they are relatively easy dogs, smart and not too high energy. Grooming will be a bit higher then a short haired dog.

Here some links to read:

Book Recommendations

Crate Training FAQ

YouTube - "It's Yer Choice" (you can really start this in very small steps as soon as you get the puppy)

House Training How Tos:

I'm sure there's a lot more to be said. Try reading these as a start ...and ask any questions IMO it is very important to make a good research about how it is to own a dog before you get one...and always expect the worse so that you can be prepared. It's really nice of you that you want to learn...and people here will help you a lot!!

You might consider getting one from a rescue group. You'll know all the quirks about the dog because s/he's been living in someone's home. You will also not likely get a puppy. You can get one that is already housebroken which may be a HUGE benefit to the other people in your home.

Just a suggestion.

Into the "book recomendations" post you'll see before and after you get a puppy from ian dunbar, I strongly recommend you to read those. You can get those for free in his web site. Another good book is the other end of the leash from Patricia McConnel.

BTW welcome to the fog forum... it is getting foggy here

hehehehe just kidding
