| My parents had Akitas while I was growing up and we all loved them. They are very stubborn and aren't very good at responding to voice commands without a lot of work. One of ours would come when called, the other came when he wanted for all 13 years of his life. lol We had a large fenced in yard so this wasn't much of a problem for us.
Many akitas are not great with other dogs-meaning dog parks, beach, etc. While we had ours we also had a great dane and we had difficulty getting the akita male to be nice to him. I have also met many along the way,as they are quite popular in upstate NY, that have difficulty with dog aggression. Of course, this is not the case with all of them and is probably something that can be overcome with proper early socialization and obedience training. The two that we raised together were male and female, both fixed early on, and they got along beautifully. They also got along well with our jack russell.
Ours never learned to fetch or catch but they would play tug of war and liked to "wrestle". The way they jump up and down on their front feet when they are happy to see you is also very cute. Very lovable dogs but they do need a strong minded owner.
Some are prone to health problems so make sure you do your research on the bloodline. |
