I do not own one now, but plan to. I have researched it quite a bit...do you have a more specific question?

Isn't the Akita the only breed who will most likely never or learn to play fetch?

My cousin has an akita and 2 young children. They are amazing together. I personally have never met an akita I never liked, but they do need training on the leash (only part my cousin has a problem with) as well as your basics.

My parents had Akitas while I was growing up and we all loved them. They are very stubborn and aren't very good at responding to voice commands without a lot of work. One of ours would come when called, the other came when he wanted for all 13 years of his life. lol We had a large fenced in yard so this wasn't much of a problem for us.

Many akitas are not great with other dogs-meaning dog parks, beach, etc. While we had ours we also had a great dane and we had difficulty getting the akita male to be nice to him. I have also met many along the way,as they are quite popular in upstate NY, that have difficulty with dog aggression. Of course, this is not the case with all of them and is probably something that can be overcome with proper early socialization and obedience training. The two that we raised together were male and female, both fixed early on, and they got along beautifully. They also got along well with our jack russell.

Ours never learned to fetch or catch but they would play tug of war and liked to "wrestle". The way they jump up and down on their front feet when they are happy to see you is also very cute. Very lovable dogs but they do need a strong minded owner.

Some are prone to health problems so make sure you do your research on the bloodline.

didn't own one personally but had a girlfriend who owned one once, does it count? I was a teen and remember that dog as my worst nightmare. He was BIG and overprotective with the family. Needless to say he didn't like me and would have loved to bite me. He was also a sadly efficient cat killer so I didn't like him much too. Besides that he was a magnificient and strong dog, but i think he needs alot of training and an energetic owner.

Matt, that didn't sound like a lot of fun! lol They do need a strong owner for sure. I did forget to mention that one of ours did kill any cat that came onto our property that was not ours. We had 70 acres, a few cats didn't fair well. She was fine with our cats in the house and outside though.
