Alaskan Klee Kai

Hi,

I'm very interested in this breed. I don't know an Alaskan Klee Kai personally, because there are no Klee Kai breeders in Germany and I guess the imported ones are very rare. So is this just a miniature version of an Alaskan Husky or has it a different character? They look very cute, but what about their hunting instinct and do they need much exercise?

If I would ask this in a German dog forum, they would get very angry, because this is not an accepted breed here and Klee Kais are classified as "designer dogs". (But I have the feeling that they don't like small breeds at all in this forums ) What do you think about this miniature lookalike Husky?

Please ignore my grammar mistakes

Sorry I can't help you, as I have only ever met one.

But, he was such an amazing little dog. He looked exactly like a miniature husky, but behaved very calm and mature and friendly. It had me thinking if I ever wanted a mini dog that was purebred that this is one I would look into getting.

But I'm in Canada, and they originate here, and there are breeders within a (very) long drive.

I have only met 2 AKK up close and personal and unfortunately the two could not have been anymore different from eachother. One was cool, calm, and collected; almost bombproof and tolerant of everything we had to do with him. The other was a total nut bag, he screamed when you touched him, screamed when you weren't giving him attention and just seemed stressed by everything in general. Though in the second dogs defense, his personality issues may be perpetuated by his owner who frets about every little thing that he does.

As far as designer dog status goes, that all depends on who you ask and what their definition of a purebred/designer dog is. Your ooddles and doodles are quite often straight up mixes of 2 different purebreds with no future outlook for the "breed" as a whole, so it's very easy to define most of them as designer or mixed breed. Whereas with AKK it originated as a mixture of several breeds with a very clear and defined desired result. From my limited understanding of the breed they are no longer mixing in other purebreds to the breed and are now just breeding AKKs to AKKs. There's also a consistentcy to their look, and that may be true with the temperment but they're just to uncommon. With those typical designer breeds there is very little predictability.

You may want to try contacting a few breeders and see what they have to say about the breed.

I thought they were much more common in the US or Canada??

You mentioned what I read in the internet before. Klee Kais are not that steady in their character. When it's time I'll aske a breeder about that.

I'm not going to have a Klee Kai together with my two chihuahuas, I think they really don't fit so well..maybe the spitz part but not the schipperke or husky part in this breed.

I think there are some AKKs in Finland (they have a small breed club and a FB group) but I don't know if there is anyone breeding them and if there is, the puppies are likely already spoken for. It is a new, rare breed so it is not easy to breed them and importing good dogs for stud probably requires some very good connections across the ocean too.

I don't know anything about the breed's temperament but I once read about the shyness/unstability too. I hope the breeders are wise enogh not to ignore temperament and health.

AKKs look pretty but it is so rare that if I ever get a small dog I'll probably look into the direction of pure Schipperke, Mittelspitz, or Sheltie, or with some reservations, Lancashire heeler, Västgötaspetz, or some breeds of the terrier group because I am too impatient to wait for what can become years.

I've met a few, and we have one at our daycare! In nature, they are very much like a mini husky, and I think this is the aim of breeders. Aloof toward strangers, but if well-socialized they will calmly accept pets. Very intelligent, fickle, almost catlike in nature. As far as their social skills with dogs, they're not indiscriminate players in the way that a retriever or a bully might be, but they do have a highly-developed "language" and are quite communicative with other dogs.

As far as exercise goes, I'd say they are middle of the road. Definitely spend extra time socializing them to humans and being handled by strangers though (groomers, vets, etcetera).
