Airedale Terrier

So I've been researching a lot for when I get a dog when we move. Originally I thought I was thinking about getting a Sheltie but after more researching I came across the Airedale Terriers and I thought they were neat and they fitted my requirements. But I was just wondering if anybody here owns one or if someone had anyother type of advice on this breed. Thanks for any advice!

airedales are not dogs that i would recommend lightly... they require A LOT of TRAINING, SOCIALIZING, EXERCISE AND STIMULATION... they are high energy terriers, they need work, and lots of it.... they have a tendency to be dog aggressive... by a lot, i mean hours per day of exercise and training... by job, i mean something that works them regularly, both physically and mentally... some dog sports (like agility) might meet this need, but that depends on the dog...

as mikey asked... what are your requirements?

there are lots of higher energy dog breeds that are very smart that would be "easier" dogs to deal with in general... what is it about airedales that you like?

Well I've been researching a lot on good family dogs and dogs that aren't that aggresive and they came up a few times.

If you want a good family dog then a lab or golden may be better suited for you!

Unless you are ready for the terrier temperament and energy level (which most people aren't and never will be!), an airedale is probably not the best idea. Or if you are set on a terrier, try looking at shelters and rescues for a more laid back terrier or terrier mix.

I was also going to mention that Airedale can have an aggressive streak and need a ton of socialization and training, though there are always exceptions of course. I knew one name Portia that was a sweetheart, but I have known a couple others that have had an intense terrier-like personality.

A very good friend of my father is an Airedale breeder so I asked him about them.
He said they are very versatile dogs very high energy with high prey drive and although they can be dog-aggressive usually they are not (I'm not sure if it's the lines here). But like Fawkese said they need dedication to work with them!

And yeah one thing in the breed is that they need a lot of dedication and training that's why I wasn't sure on this breed...
