neutered and still humping!

hey guys any ideas on this, cooper was neutered at start of jan, he's totally over it by now, but he is still humping all the time, like a couple of times a day. he only humps his bed, he will take the pillow part out of his bed and shake it all around then bite it/ chew on it for a while and then hump it for as long as he can, i always (when i catch him) just pull the pillow away and put it back in his bed and tell him ah-ah, but he will keep taking the pillow out every chance he gets!
having 2little boys (4&5years) asking me whats cooper doing? i told them 'well u know cooper alwys sees u guys cycling your bikes and he would love to be able to cycle a bike so he's just pretending to cycle a bike' needless to see my kids regularly call me to tell me 'cooper's cycling his bed again'

Dogs can hump even after they are neutered, it doesn't always mean a sexual thing. It also has to do with establishing dominance. If he is still young he could be still trying to establish his ranking in your family (but of course you and your family should be his "pack leaders"). He should end up growing out of this stage, but if you have him playing with other dogs (no matter what age he is or the sex of the other dog, you might see him perform this behavior) It is probably okay if he only does it to his bed, but if he starts doing it to people, or your children, that is not a good thing.

Humping is whats called a "fixed action pattern" kinda like preprogrammed software in your dog.

Just like dogs when they play they will exhibit chasing, stalking, biting, killing etc they will also play out sexual behaviors. Practice per say. Humping is a life skill (lol)

Som' puppies outgrow it, but som' will need alot of redirection. If you don't like it, continue to interupt it and give him som'thing else to do

and like MSE noted, its common even if the dog is neutered.

While his behaviour may have been because he was intact it could just as likely be a social behaviour and that would be my thought....given that he is a terrier. Or it could be habit, OCD behaviour or response to an irritation or infection....maybe have him vet checked if you are worried. Other than distracting him away from it there isn't gonna be a lot that you can do.

gone2dogs u say this could be infection, i also was asking on here a while ago about submissive urination as cooper will urinate when certain people are petting him or it can also depend on how u approach him/ or even how u stand while u pet him. if someone he doesnt know tries to pet him he will pee a few drops on the ground while they're touching him! if he has done something naughty and is in trouble he can pee, basicly anything can set him off! on the other hand he is completly house trained never does full wee in the house just these drops depending on different situations? ive had the vet give him antibiotic for urine infection, didnt help. and we have been trying to stop this in lots of different ways, none have been sucessful so far. if im cleaning his paws or putting on his collar he will always start licking his privates, is that normal for dogs, or does he have some kind of problem? what do u guys think?? thanks in advance

Also I am curious to another post, please explain why he would doing this just because he was intact and a terrier.

I have a household of terriers, including a neutered male that doesn't hump anyone/thing but has bred a female when given the chance. Plus I have an intact stud that has been used for limited breeding, lives in a house with intact females and he has never humped anything. I don't have kennels, the dogs all live with us, so knowing their behaviour is an easy thing to do.

neutering generally wont stop it. My intact dog doesn't hump anything. so having testicules or not really isn't why they do it.

Its for many reasons. play, dominance, sexual ect.

if you don't want him doing it. stop him every time he does. You will need tot rain him not too.

Ditto absolutely-it's play behavior. A lot of dogs just get excited and hump. If Mikey is very excited he will hump air for a minute or so



It's entirely doubtful a dog humps because of an infection-a UTI usually presents with frequent urinations, small amounts of urine, accidents, straining to urinate and increased/decreased water intake. Not with humping

And then to the other-submissive urination. IT's not caused by an infection either-it's a behavior issue. A dog with an infection will 'leak' all the time, not jsut when meeting new people and when excited. So if it's as your describing your dealing with submissive urination which training can fix.
