Bark, bark, bark, bark, bark

What are some methods you've used to keep your talking canines from barking their heads off?

I'm working with a dog who loves to talk when people come over. When a guest comes in and sits on the couch, he'll sit right next to them and bark for a loooong time. This dog has a piercing high pitch bark that kinda hurts the ears. I've been using the removal technique and its working pretty well.

I use the removal technique with my dogs and find it pretty effective! It really just takes time and consistency.

I also really work on focus/attention with my dogs. I find it really useful when we are out and about. 95% of the time all I have to do is tell them to "look" and point at my eye to get them to sit and just stare at me. And of course they get yummy rewards.
The 5% of the time that they don't listen would normally be in a really exciting and busy place (think Pet Expos). I normally just turn around and walk away to a quieter location (one away from the action but still close enough that they still see whats going on) and allow them to settle down. I do some attention work and then a few basic commands. Then we mover forward. If they loose their cool again, we stop and repeat. I do this until we reach our destination with everone under control.

Removal is a good technique...I also like to put barking and silence on cue

Ditto both

Mandy barked a lot in the yard, and being neurotic like I am I didn't want her out barking-people sometimes tease or hurt dogs who are out barking all the time. So for her the second she barked, I'd just call her in immediately. She's smart and learned she didn't get to keep playing outside if she was making a racket

Until you said "piercing high pitch" I thought you may be referring to a hound. They like to bark at things...especially things they want to move.

I can't do that with Snickers...she looks at me and says "No, that's OK, I'm good".

The "come" command doesn't work around the fence for me

I work on calming the dog down BEFORE i even open the door. Most of the time guests trigger excitement by just knocking at the door. Plus the guests MUST ignore my dog, once again to avoid increasing the excitement. If the guests dont ignore my dog i will not remove him and they have to face the concequences of not following my house's rules

I can tell you that threatening to duct tape their mouth closed doesn't work.

Tigger was a barking fruitcake all day today. She gets that way maybe every 4th or 5th day. She just likes to bark to make noise sometimes.
