Default Ball Osbsession.

I am so frustrated and I know it is my fault but still! We went the park for a walk this afternoon. As we got close I realized their were people at the tennis court. They had about 25 balls all over the court!! Of course Kimber went bonkers again....GRR so I am dragging him through the park while he is screaming like I just shot him through the side.

I don't even know where to begin to fix this problem. I can barely hold on to him when he gets like that. It is very difficult to get my husband to find the time to help with the training and this is something that needs to be fixed sooner than later. I mean can I not go to the park anymore?

Hmm... can you tie her to something to help keep her back? Maybe toss treats her way if you're not close enough? Umm, teach her leave it with a ball?

I'm sorry, I know how you feel. I've pretty much have no one to practice with these days. Mom's waaay busy with her work.

I've got a really cool leash, I'll google a pic real quick...

Quality Hands Free Dog Leash - Quick Hitch Leash

That is what it basically is... mine is made by a different company and is 6 feet long, but same design. I LOVE it. It's awesome for when we're walking in parks. I just attach her to a bench and I can get out some water from my backpack or just sit and not have to hold her leash. It also helps if we're out and I need to attach her to something like a tree, or my dad's truck hitch, or a pole, etc...

what about practicing the leave it training with a ball...you could progress to bouncing the ball for leave-it and up the criteria so that when you are in that situation he is looking at you instead of the ball.

Amanda I LOVE the leash! Where did you get it?

I will start working on leave it with a ball. Thanks for the suggestion. One problem I have with the Leave It is he will look at me when I say it for about 2 seconds but as soon as say Good Boy he goes right back to it. So I guess I need to start working on duration during training??

Sorry for the negative post I was just upset. It is hard on me because he is SO strong and I feel terrible dragging him through the park.

yes...work on duration.... sounds like he thinks "good boy" is the release so i wouldn't use it....i would just release him, whatever word you are going to use, get it or okay or whatever and getting the ball is the reinforcement for leaving the ball....

don't be sorry btw...you just sounded frustrated, and that's okay bc this sort of thing is frustrating.... especially with the way you described his crying...sort of a tangent, but similar story...i used to take my cat everywhere (before he decided he hated the car...that's another story tho) so i would take him to the pet store w me...he does well on a harness and leash....first time i took him i put him in the toddler seat on the cart and hooked the leash in...he was soooo good for most of the visit...i showed him the fish...that hamsters...let him pick out toys....some little kids came over and he said hello...then, we walked past the big glass window where the bird room was...he jumped outta the cart screaming his head off and hit the glass hard...then i had to wrestle this screaming cat back into the cart, he kept trying to climb over my shoulder and back to the birds...and he sounded like a little kid having a tantrum, in fact i think he was having a tantrum...omg it was so embarrassing! and i had just finished explaining to everyone in the pet store how much he liked it how good he always was...
not the exact same, but at least you aren't alone....

Oh my goodness it DOES sound similar....I can laugh now but when Kimber was going nutso over the balls and I was fighting with him this man came up to me and he said "I think he wants the balls" LoL I was thinking " NO You really think that's it" (I am not a mean person I swear) LoL.

It was hard because people would think I was beating him Oh that scream!

I got it at Gabriel Brothers I think... Some clothing store, but it had one little pet isle. They also sell it at our pet store.

My dog that passed away was part shiba inu...they do som'thing called the "shiba scream" oh dear god it was horrible...I grabbed him once at the dog park and he started screaming and stopped when I let go...people thought I was pinching/hitting him.
