Natural Wolf Rock Art

Every spring we love to go Mushroom hunting. My husband looks for mushrooms and I look for interesting rocks finding them much more lasting then mushrooms.

This year I found an incredible rock. It's a big rock, weighing 8 pounds and measures 10" long, 5" wide, and 3.5" deep. I've pictured it below exactly how the camera captured it. No photo manipulation at all except to give it a background more in keeping with the forum.

There's no doubt in my mind that God is the best artist in all the universe!

Whoa that's awesome! At first I only skimmed what you wrote and the very first thing that I saw on the rock was a T-rex. XD

I saw that bright orange spot as the dinosaur's head and the brown coloring coming from below the orange as the shape of the body. There's also black lines on the orange spot that sorta look like eyes to me. :P

Grapefruit, that's awesome too. It only took me a few seconds to see the TRex inside the wolf rock. Good eyes!

When I first found the rock it immediately caught my attention, although I wasn't sure why. I stood there studing it, looking, like you did, for something inside the rock. It took a minute to see that the shape of the whole rock was what caught my eye and when I did see the Wolf I got very excited! The only thing not there was the ears. Now I know it was the TRex that ate them! LOL!

Actually I see the ears as folded back as if the wolf is running.

That's cool too. He does look like he's running full out, and smiling too. Born free to run!

Geo, this might help. I made a sketch of the outline of the rock which makes it look like a wolf and also a sketch of the percieved Trex made by the iron deposits in the rock. After looking at this, then picture it imposed over the rock and you should see the shapes then.

Oh, I see it! Very neat. I've been known to take home rocks that are shaped like something or have a nifty little pattern on them. Great find!

Geo, glad you can see it now. I guess I could also call it a Dog Rock, but Wolf Rock somehow sounds better. And that little TRex is just a bonus.

instinct, do you still have your shape rocks? What have you found?

I once found one that looked just like a cross cut section of a large vertabra (sp?). I ended up selling it on Ebay for 80.00 but have many times wished I had kept it. I'm keeping my Wolf rock though and am going to try to find someone who works with wood to make me a specialized stand for it so I can display it.

I also have a piece of Hemotite that was used thousands of years ago as a "pencil" until the writing point got too short and it was tossed. The depressions where the thumb and the forefinger fits has been worn from years of use in such a way that it fits the hand perfectly! And it's been worn smooth and shiny from being held for years and years. It's sooooo cool! It's not very big, about 2.5" long and 1" high, and the end is very blunt, although I was told it probably started off with a very long tapered tip until it was finally worn away by using it as a drawing instrument. It leaves a perfectly light colored mark on most darker rocks. I knew it was something special when I found it and took it to a nearby university geology department. They sent me to an Early American Peoples specialist and he's the one who identified it as a discarded writing instrument, used probably 500+ years ago.

I have since found another discarded writing instrument, this one made of sandstone, so I have two very different ones.

I also found a great arrowhead on one of my rock hunts.

I have a friend who collects natural heart shaped rocks, but I've never found any of those.

I do love rock hunting, and so does Radar! Well, he loves smelling everything when I go rock hunting. Now If I could just train him to hunt for interesting rocks! LOL!
