Why is it so hard to find one, I live nyc and all of the shelters and rescues have only medium to big dogs and we are looking for a toy breed, preferably yorkie or maltese or a mix breed. I dont see why they wouldnt have any around here and I've been looking all over the internet. If anyone knows of any can you please let me know.

I have heard that NY state does have a 'shortage" of small dogs in shelters...perhaps you can travel a bit to find a dog?

They dont have toy breeds because people adopt them quick. There arent many toy rescues because people just want a dog to stick in a purse, they dont care if it has a problem or not. Well, thats just how it seems in my eyes. Thats not the case for all though, take Crio for example. She has toys and takes great care of them, and Im sure she didnt adopt just to stick a dog in a purse lol.
I think people know what I mean.
Sorry xD I just get so mad when I see people come in the shelter I volunteered at looking for a toy breed and didnt bother asking about the dogs' history or anything.

yea I have i was jus curious to know why this might be the case around such a big city like NY. From doing research I've found that there are some other cities and states that have shelters specifically for toy breeds but just not here.

It's not that they are turning toy breeds away or euthing them. They clearly just don't have them because they don't have so many toy/small breeds being dumped. This is a GOOD thing Not for your search but it is good.

Our local humane society brings up 200 small/toy dogs from California about every two months now (they just piloted a project last year) People line up for days to adopt these small dogs.
So the difference is ; here no one or not many get rid of their small dog (plus other factors like we have the reserves who have unspeutered big dogs breeding etc) Where as California obviously has enough dog population that their unwanted dog population includes small dogs

We had to get a small dog for our neighbor hood (limit is 18" at the shoulder) though I checked our HS and the other 10 or so animal rescue/shelters in the area, we actually adopted Mikey in Saskatchewan, about five hours away.

It is hard in some areas to get smaller dogs-it's a pain. But it's a good thing too!!
So keep an eye on petfinder.com You'l find the right one-but you may have to travel for him/her

I think you have mentioned this before, wonderful idea...do you know what shelters/areas they get the dogs from? At the kill shelters here the toy dogs outnumber the med/big dogs...som'times 2 to 1. Chihuahuas (and mixes) are the most popular breed in los angeles county...followed by pit bulls.
